Making Sight Words Fun with Online BINGO
How do you review sight words? Flash cards? Boring! Worksheets? Boring! Writing them five times? Boring!
Are you looking for fun ways to teach sight words to students? How about turning it into a game? My students would study anything if we could play BINGO while doing it!
Projecting the Words
When we play various BINGO games, there is one problem: I usually have to repeat the word being called 100 times. “What was the word?” “Can you repeat the word?” “What did she say?” I’ve discovered that if I project the word on the Smart Board, then I don’t have to repeat it. Students have ample time to search their BINGO boards and put a chip on the word. And, my students love to do any interactive activities or play games on the Smart Board.
Two Levels of the Game
I created two versions in PowerPoint of “Sight Word Projector BINGO” for my Teachers pay Teachers store, “Little Library of Learning.” One is geared toward first grade sight words and the other towards second grade (I really don’t put the grade on the actual projected game, in case you have students reading at a lower level or a mixed grade group…they don’t need to know what specific grade the words are from).
As you project the words, have the kids take turns reading the words out loud. The BINGO boards are very simple: a 3 x 3 grid. You can print them out and the kids can X the words out with a crayon, or you can laminate them and use BINGO chips. The kids will have so much fun, they will not even realize they are reviewing their sight words!
The Love of Winning
Actually, there is a second problem with BINGO games: they want to know what the “prizes” are for winning. Sometimes I give everyone a bookmark at the end, but usually, I say, “The love of learning is its own reward.” (Yes, there is a lot of groaning at that “great” prize!)
These two grade-level activities are now available in a cost-saving bundle:
